When your browser wants to download your Textpattern site's feed...

… clap your hands?

Finally! After lots & lots of digging, false starts, fear and loathing, I found the reason for the “download” feed problem that some people are having with Textpattern (including me until today).

The problem has to do with a space or spaces after the PHP end tag (?<) of a plugin in the plugin cache folder. If there is/are space(s) after the end tag, or after any newline (/n) after the end tag, said space(s) are output as text. This is because of the include function used by the load_plugin function of txplib_misc.php.

So! Word to the wise: make very, very sure that there are no spaces after the end tags of plugins in the plugin cache directory. And please share this information, as Textpattern’s FAQ doesn’t mention this bit of vital information.
