Re: [plugin] [ORPHAN] rss_unlimited_categories - Unltd. Article Categories

Thanks everyone for the compliments.

TaeWoo – Thanks for pointing that out. My code inadvertently worked only for /section/ID/title URLs. The v0.1 download is updated.

Re: [plugin] [ORPHAN] rss_unlimited_categories - Unltd. Article Categories

Nice work Rob! Hope this isn’t too off-topic, but I have a question. How do you control the output of the category URLs? Is it just like the old way, with <txp:if_category>? For some reason I have always had trouble with category pages in Textpattern.

I am trying to implement this for an (as yet unstyled) photoblog template I am working on. Articles are posted to the “archive” section, with the most recent (limit=“1”) appearing on the front page (display on front page = yes). My archive page template simply uses <txp:if_individual_article> and <txp:if_article_list> to display permalinked articles and thumbnailed links to them, respectively.

This is a pretty standard setup. Now I’ve got your plug-in outputting the appropriate category links (using linktosection=“archive”). Everybody always says that clean category URLs use the default section’s page template, so I tried using <txp:if_category> on that page so that those links would output linked thumbnails, like the archive root page. Can you see why I’m getting 404’d on all of them? I’m stumped.

My default page template:

<code>

< txp:if_category>
<body id=“archives”>
<div id=“top”>
< txp:output_form form=“header-nav-form” />
<ul id=“allcats”>
< txp:rss_unlimited_categories_list linktosection=“archive” break=“li” />
</ul>
<h3>Photos filed under < txp:c /></h3>
<ol id=“photothumbs”>
< txp:article form=“archive-form” />
</ol> <!— end photothumbs —>
</div><!— end top —>

<txp:else />

<body id=“current”>
<div id=“top”>
< txp:output_form form=“header-nav-form” />
< txp:article limit=“1” />
</div><!— end top —>

< /txp:if_category>

</body>
</html>
</code>

Can you change to /section/ID/title URLs and see if you still get a 404?

Still get 404s with section/ID/title.

I wonder if it’s something to do with my Textdrive setup. I had trouble on my own photoblog with category URLs and reverted to the messy, section-specific kind.

This is awesome. Thanks so much.

PS – Do you know if there is something like this in the works for links so that can have multiple categories that a link can be in? Been looking for something like that which would be incredible.

This looks great. Is there a way to “easily” revert back to a previous setup (as in go back to the old tables)?

Thanks

Excellent work. Do you have a tag for displaying related articles based on your new category field, like related_article txp tag? It would be perfect!

Re: [plugin] [ORPHAN] rss_unlimited_categories - Unltd. Article Categories

As I said in your blog: Great work! Especially the ran_txp_tags plugin slows down when working on a big TXP site. Maybe this works better with your plug-in.

But:
Is there any way to convert all the tags inserted into the Custom1 field (for the ran_txp_tags plugin) to the new textpattern_category table (I do not know too much about SQL commands)?

txp at irox.de since spring 2004 (g1.17) & at roxomatic since 2006.

Re: [plugin] [ORPHAN] rss_unlimited_categories - Unltd. Article Categories

jmuspratt – What’s your Site URL set to?

js – Sorry, nothing like this in the works for links.

blumie – There’s nothing to revert really. Nothing is removed from the existing categories.

Zanza – I thought about that but haven’t done it yet.

Kossatch – There’s no easy way I can think of assuming you have more than one tag in that custom field. It would probably take some custom PHP + SQL to get the job done.

Re: [plugin] [ORPHAN] rss_unlimited_categories - Unltd. Article Categories

Rob —

My Site URL is set to jamesmuspratt.com/widescreen/demo, and I actually have been using <txp:site_url /> to make the template more portable (e.g. it’s the “current” nav link at top left). So it seems to work fine.

For some reason messy URLs seem to work in outputting the articles, but they’re clearly using the old category tables: see the messy version of canada. (I’m sure because “Statue” is the only article I left an old category on — for comparison all three articles are tagged with “canada” using your plugin, so all three should show up once the clean canada tag starts working.)

Is it possible I have to uncomment one of the .htaccess lines in the root to get clean category links to work?

Your livesearch is awesome, by the way. Still working on integrating that.
